It is a small dog that combines a muscular figure, joyful disposition, and great spontaneity. Canine representatives of this breed are sometimes called American gentlemen.
He is overly attached to the owner, also requires a lot of attention, but at the same time is not intrusive.
He is a gentle and cheerful companion for children and adults - he will work in every family!!!
The Boston Terrier is a companion dog even with the blood of Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers in its veins. Boston comes from the United States and his ancestors come from Great Britain.
In the mid-nineteenth century, in the vicinity of Boston’s, English and Irish emigrants crossed these dogs with English white terriers. In the beginning, their goal was to get a better fighting dog. In the end, however, it was concluded that the pooch obtained because of crossbreeds has interesting features and is much better suited for company than for defense. The first breed standard was established in 1891.
The Boston Terrier has an elegant appearance and a compact, symmetrical silhouette. This purebred dog has a short body and strong limbs. The characteristic features of the appearance are also a square skull with a short, square muzzle, wide-set dark eyes and a friendly expression on the face. The ears stick up strongly and the tail is set low and short.
The breed standard allows for several weight categories. Boston dogs may weigh up to:
⦁ Miniature - up to 6.8 kg
⦁ Standard - 6.8 to 9.0 kg
⦁ Large Boston Terrier - 9.0 - 11.35 kg.
There is no information on the ideal height at the withers in the pattern. We will, however, get a description of the perfect robe. The Boston Dog has a short, smooth, and fine coat. The acceptable color is brindle, black or seal. Seal dogs appear black but have a red tint when viewed in bright light. Moreover, all color variations must have white markings. The description of the required meanings is a white ring on the muzzle, a white arrow between the eyes and a white breast. Dogs may also have the desired markings in other places (e.g., white forelimbs), but their absence is not a serious defect and does not disqualify them from participating in shows.
Boston’s were originally bred to participate in dog fights. In theory, it was supposed to be a tough, aggressive, and brave dog. However, the ideas of the first breeders completely failed and the Boston Terrier became a FREE OF AGGRESSION, a very friendly companion dog.
The character of the Boston Dog is largely similar to French Bulldogs. Both a puppy and an adult dog of this breed are cheerful, trusting and very sociable. Our miniature or Boston in standard sizes eagerly establishes contacts with unknown people or animals. It does not provoke conflicts and does not cause problems during walks. What is more, the friendly nature of the Boston Terrier makes it easy to have a good relationship with other household pets. It can be a different dog, cat or even a domestic rabbit. Among the representatives of the Boston dog breed, we will not find a tendency to dominance or unjustified aggression. It is also not a dog with a hunting instinct, so the breed will leave the neighbors' cats or other fast-moving animals alone.
When describing the nature of the breed, it should be emphasized that it is attached to humans. Boston’s develop strong relationships with all family members.
The puppy must be taught to stay home alone from the very beginning, because due to his great attachment, he may suffer from separation anxiety. Our miniature can then destroy household items or bark loudly.
The character of the Boston Terrier is also reflected in the friendly attitude towards children. Representatives of this breed are ideal pets for the whole family. Joyful and extremely lively, they can be wonderful companions for slightly older children. Dogs of this breed love the company of their owners but are not overly persistent. In everyday contacts with their family, they will be as friendly as a Miniature Spitz and persistent in playing as a basset hound
The Boston Terrier is recognized as a healthy breed that rarely gets severe disease. The dog has a brachycephalic skull structure, but this is not as problematic as in the case of French bulldogs. The Boston Terrier usually has no breathing problems and is better able to withstand hot weather. Thanks to this, it is also a dog with much greater endurance and willingness to intense physical play.
The breed of a dog sometimes has genetic diseases. Their health can be disturbed by juvenile cataracts and kneecap prolapse. A miniature with this type of disease should not be licensed for breeding. Testing for cataracts and patellar prolapse are not obligatory in Polish dog kennels, but they turn out to be a particularly good practice.
When describing health problems, it is also worth mentioning the low resistance to freezing temperatures. The short coat of the breed makes the miniature especially sensitive to weather changes. Therefore, the dog may require additional coverings during the walks to protect it during the winter. Eye irritation is also a common disease. Therefore, the breeder should describe the proper care of the puppy and point out simple ways to clean the eye area.
You should also remember that the puppy has a large head, so births among breeding female can be difficult. In many cases, Boston terriers give birth to a cesarean section
A miniature or standard size Boston Terrier is a dog that is quite easy to care for. The short, smooth fur only needs regular brushing to remove any dull hair. The bristles do not become tangled, and dirt does not get tangled up in it. As a result, bathing can be kept to a minimum.
When describing the proper care, it is also worth mentioning the regular cleaning of the eye area. A cotton pad soaked in boiled water, saline or colloidal silver will work well for this purpose. By wiping the eye area, we remove minor dirt, and consequently minimize the risk of disease (e.g., eyeball inflammation)
Puppies and adult Boston Terriers are owner-focused dogs. Willingness to cooperate with people and eloquence make the Boston Dog learn new tricks quickly. While playing with the dog, we can relieve the need for physical and intellectual activity.
